Applications for the Brater scholarship are now open for students traveling during the 2026-2027 academic year. The Brater Family Scholarship in Global Health supports students to travel to low-income countries, particularly Kenya with the AMPATH program, for a global health educational experience. Funds should be used to defray travel expenses, lodging, and program costs while on site.
Special consideration will be given to Indiana University School of Medicine students with financial need who would be unable to participate in an international education experience without receipt of the scholarship. The scholarship is not able to support faith-based programs or electives. This scholarship was established in 2019 by D. Craig Brater, M.D. (former Dean of IU School of Medicine) and Stephanie Brater, long-time champions of the AMPATH program.
Students interested in applying should complete this application form by March 22, 2026. For questions, contact Victoria Eder, IU Center for Global Health Assistant Director for Logistics and Education Programs (vneder@iu.edu).
Students must be aware that if they already have been given a full financial package, the scholarship will reduce the loan burden but will not be given as a direct disbursement; students should contact Student Financial Services with questions about how the scholarship would affect their finances.
