The Certificate Track is a NAACLS accredited 24 credit hour / 2-semester long program that provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to sit for the ASCP HT or HTL certification examination. Student's graduate with a Certificate in Histotechnology from Indiana University School of Medicine. PREREQUISITE #1: DEGREE For HT (ASCP) certification eligibility: Applicants must hold an associate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university with an overall verified GPA of at least 2.3 on a 4.0. The degree must include 12 credit hours of chemistry and biology (combined). If these courses are not included within the degree, they must be taken in addition to the degree with a min 2.0 in a course and an earned overall 2.3 GPA. For HTL (ASCP) certification eligibility: Applicants must hold a bachelor or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university with an overall verified GPA of at least 2.3 on a 4.0. The degree must include 30 credit hours of chemistry and biology (combined) If these courses are not included within the degree, they must be taken in addition to the degree with a min 2.0 in a course and an earned overall 2.3 GPA. NOTE ON LIFE SCIENCE COURSES: If the applicant is not working in a medical science lab as a lab assistant or equivalent capacity Biology credits earned more than seven years before application must be updated by taking 3 additional credit hours in biology within a period of time not to exceed 12 months before admission. (Biology course must be based on humans. Emphasis on processes common to all organisms, with special reference to humans. (Must earn a C or above) If the applicant is currently working in a medical lab as a lab assistant or equivalent capacity biology does not need updated. PREREQUISITE #2: LABORATORY Access to a qualified training laboratory. Students typically are employed at the training site; however, the training site may take non-employed students. It is the responsibility of the prospective student to locate a facility to train in prior to applying to the program. An affiliation agreement between the facility and university must be secured. The university will initiate the affiliation process and provides information in the application packet. PREREQUISITE #3: MENTOR(S) Must be a certified HT or HTL by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Demonstrate proficiency in and adequate knowledge of the histotechnology discipline. Have at least one-year experience as a practicing professional in the program discipline. Through the duration of the students training, the clinical liaison's continuous full-time (40 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week) employment at the bench is required to meet the training responsibilities (supervisors, managers and directors must spend time working at the bench to meet training time commitment). Providing general supervision of the student during their technical training. Direct the practical training in histologic technique through use of demonstration, explanation and evaluation of required entry-level skills. NOTE: The student may have more than one clinical liaison to meet the facilities scheduling, staffing and training requirements. | The Associate Degree Track is a 60 credit hour degree program (30 undergraduate courses and 30 histotechnology program courses). Graduates will earn an Associate's Degree of Applied Science in Histotechnology and will be provided with the knowledge and skills needed to sit for the ASCP National HT certification exam. PREREQUISITE #1: COLLEGE CREDITS must be taken at a regionally accredited college or university. Only courses with an earned grade of 2.0 on a 4.0 (C) will transfer to IU. You must earn an overall minimum GPA of 2.3 (C+) based on a 4.0 scale.
