If child is found ineligible: This particular study wouldn't be a good fit for [child].
If family is already in the registry: Your information is in the SLHS research registry and a researcher will reach out to you if you are eligible for other studies in the future. Thank you so much for your time!
If family is not already in the registry: If you would like, the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences Department has a research registry for families interested in participating in research studies. I can send a link to that survey if you are interested.
Thank you so much for your time!
If child is found eligible: Thanks so much for sharing that information with me. It sounds like this study would be a good fit for [child]! Is now a good time to tell you a little more about the study? [if not, ask when would be a better time].
In this study, we are interested in how sensory experiences, like touch and smell, help children learn new words. If you decide to participate, you and [child] would come in to our lab here in West Lafayette, and [child] would do things like learn new words and complete puzzles. You would fill out some surveys about [child]'s development. During the visit, [child] would see some new objects and learn words for those objects. For two of the objects, we use an artificial scent so that the objects have a smell. There are no known allergens to these smells, but we like to let parents know beforehand in case their child has any sensitivities to smells. [pause] You would receive $30 for your time, $10 for completing the surveys, and [child] would receive a book.

FAQ:
1. Will my child be alone during the visit? You and your child will be together for the entire visit!
2. What do the scents smell like? One scent is described as being sweet, while the other is described as being citrusy. You will be with your child during the word learning study so we will be interested to hear what you think!
3. I'm interested, but I don't want my child exposed to artificial scents. I completely understand! It seems like this particular study wouldn't be a good fit, but we will reach out if there are other studies to participate in!
4. My child has allergies - is that a problem? The scents we use are fragrance grade and there are no known allergens in the scents. However, it is completely up to you if you feel comfortable particpating. I can also put you in touch with our scent-specialist, Dr. Corrie Running, who can answer any additional questions you have. [if wants to talk to Dr. Running, ask if it is okay to email and cc her, or if they want Dr. Running to call instead - then tell Phil :)
5. What kind of surveys am I filling out? You will complete surveys about your child's vocabluary and their reactions to certain senses, like touch, sound, and smell.
6. Are there any benefits to participating in the study? There are no benefits to those completing this study. The study is conducted for research purposes only. Upon completion of the study, the researchers may send you a letter describing findings.. You will also be reimbursed $30 for coming in to the lab and $10 for completing the surveys.
If not interested: I completely understand. Thank you so much for your time, and I hope you have a great day!
If interested: Super! Are there days or times that work best for you? [open LLAMA testing calendar and enter participant number into the calendar (e.g., STL_00X) for a one-hour visit when a study RA is available].
Say: Will you have another child with you when you come in for the visit? [determine need for childcare]. If they need childcare, add to the calendar "CHILDCARE NEEDED"
- If requesting a weekend visit: Sure thing! [find proposed time and put on calendar with "tentative"]. Let me reach out to our research staff to make sure we have availability on that day. I'll get back to you right away once they confirm.
Online Consent: One of the surveys for the study is a little bit long, so some parents like to complete the survey before they come in to the lab. If you would like to do this, we can sign an online consent form and I can send you a link to the survey before the visit. Would you like me to send you the consent form now?
If yes: Super, I will let my colleague Phil know to send you the consent form. Real quickly, I'll go over the consent information. It covers everyting we talked about with a few additional details.
Your participation in the study is completely optional - You have the right to withdraw from the study at any point and you will still be compensated for the activities you have completed. If [child] ever becomes bored or upset, we will take a break or switch to a different activity. All of the information we collect will be kept confidential - we keep all information on secure, digital database and secure servers. Only approved study members have access to this data. If you have concerns you can contact the lead investigator, Dr. Arielle Borovsky, or the Purdue Institutional Review Board. If you have any questions after reviewing the consent form, please reach out to me and we can talk more.
After you have had a chance to read and sign the consent form, Phil will send a link to your study surveys. He'll also send a confirmation email with directions to the lab.
Thank you so much, and we are looking forward to seeing [child] and you on [date and time].
If no: That's fine - we will sign a consent form in person. I will send you a confirmation email with our address. Thank you so much, and we are looking forward to seeing [child] and you on [date and time].
